Tanya Downin joined St. John’s Episcopal Church as Parish Administrator in December 2024. In addition to keeping the church together, she is a talented artist, and her headshot backdrop is an example of her work. Keep an eye out for her work in the community. Five of the Hapeville Butterflies are by her hand. Tanya and her husband Dallas are a local College Park Residents and she is a mother to her beautiful and bubbly daughter, Raegen.
Tanya’s mother is also a devoted SJEC parish member.

Cameron Carey, Director of Music

Before coming to St. John’s, Cameron served as the Director of Music at St. Dunstan’s (2020-2025) and St. Teresa’s Episcopal Church (2016-2020). While an undergraduate student at the University of North Georgia, he served as Parish Musician at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Sautee, and as Music Director at Dahlonega Presbyterian Church.

Cameron has received high honors and awards for his piano festival and competition performances including being chosen twice as state winner in the Georgia Music Educators All-State Piano Competition and receiving first place in the Atlanta Romantic Music Festival Piano Competition for the college level. Cameron completed his graduate degree in Music at Georgia State University in 2018, studying piano with Dr. Geoffrey Haydon and organ with Dr. Jens Korndörfer. Aside from his music activities, Cameron works in fundraising at the High Museum of Art as Coordinator of Individual Giving.

When not working or practicing, Cameron enjoys the outdoors, reading, working out, yoga, art, traveling, coffee, and spending time with friends.

Reverend Alex Sherrill

Alex Sherrill joined the call to St. John’s Episcopal Church as Priest in Charge in March 2025. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC and baptized at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and grew up in Greenville, SC (Christ Church) and Atlanta, GA (St. Luke’s). He graduated from Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs and Southern Polytechnic State University in Kennesaw. After a 16-year career in residential construction he answered God’s call to do more in the church and entered the discernment process for priesthood. Alex graduated from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and was ordained to the priesthood in June of 2020. He began his priesthood in the Clinical Pastoral Education residency program at Emory University Hospital and working part-time as a curate, leading the Children, Youth and Families ministry at St. Bart’s. In July 2021 he became a full-time Assistant to the Rector continuing his work with Families while adding Pastoral Care, Lector & Intercessor Ministry and Buildings and Ground responsibilities. He has been married to Anna for almost 23 years and they have two children, Penson (13) and Avery (9), and two dogs, Coco (6) and Riley (6mos). He enjoys reading, swimming, skiing, camping and being at Camp Mikell, which is one of the family’s favorite places.
